The Father

Who am I, if I cannot remember who I am? Father Aarne is bewildered. Things keep disappearing, and strangers keep appearing in his home. His daughter insists he used to be an engineer—but surely he was a dancer! And where is the other daughter, the nicer one, the one who doesn’t boss around?

Hanna Ojala’s interpretation of Zeller’s The Father is uproariously funny, at times gripping, like a psychological thriller, and ultimately devastatingly tragic. It tells the story of an ailing father and his worried daughter—from both of their perspectives. Through striking visual surrealism and a powerful sound design, the production draws the audience deep into the father’s disintegrating reality. At the same time, it explores—with depth and at times through wordless means—profound questions of life, identity, love, and death.
